New bird in backyard

by Richard
(Salinas, California)

He is about the size of a sparrow, almost the same shape but more stream lined with a longer tail he is almost like a swallow, but his head and beak and breast and tail and the tops of his wings are a charcaol black while his stomach is sort of a grayish white.

At first I thought he was going to try to bathe in my pond as many birds do, but he was actually trying to catch the mosquito fish,,, which I haven't seen any birds do,,, but wished they had.

Thanks. I looked up images and that was him. The Oregon Junco is the closest.

No Picture?

Without seeing your bird, it sounds like it might be a Junco. I have several in our backyard and you have pretty much described them. The Junco is a cousin to the sparrow. I have some posted on my facebook page, myfathersworldphotography, Marion, Ohio.
