Never seen one before

Was so taken aback at seeing this bird I burnt the toast !!!! Size of young pidgeon, slim, longish beak and legs, flash of red on head and flash of yellow on tail, overall body light brown, my neighbour said it might be a green finch but it doesn't fit the description on here.

Hello Never Seen One Before,

It sounds like it is a yellow-shafted Northern Flicker.

The flicker is a woodpecker that has a favorite diet of ants and suet cakes, so put out a suet cage and they will stick around.
