need help identifying big grey bird

by Vicki T
(new berlin,wisconsin)

Spotted a large, robin size, dark grey bird drinking water from a muddy puddle. It's beak was long and solid, kind of like a woodpecker. The underside, below the neck was white. The bottom section of the wings had wide, 1-2 inches, white bands, speckled with black spots. When it flew off it MAY have has white on the tail. When it landed high in a tree it clung on similar to a woodpecker. Spotted it in wisconsin, today oct 4. Can't find it in any of my books. Any ideas?
