Mystery black and white striped head bird in Becket, Massachusetts

by Kathleen
(Becket, Massachusetts)

This bird comes to a feeder and will cling. He has a beak which is very similar to that of a purple finch but he is bigger than a finch. He is a lone feeder. He is NOT a white crowned or white throated sparrow. He has very demarcated black and white stripes on his head- at least four or five and a white neck. The rest of his body is on the dark side. He likes peanuts and other nuts shelled at the feeder. By the time I get my camera, he is gone. I have checked all of my bird books and can't find him.
