My Feisty Rose Breasted Grosbeak

by Joan Book
(Jackson, New Jersey)

I live in Jackson, NJ and this week I was very surprised to see a male Rose Breasted Grosbeak at my feeder. The feeder is an Audubon brand with extra long perches, and I fill it with black oil sunflower seeds. What surprised me even more was he repeatedly chased away the blue jays and starlings. He didn't mind the cardinals, smaller finches, chickadees, titmice, etc., but those bigger birds didn't stand a chance! After he ate his fill, he rested on a branch protecting "his" feeder. I went outside to get a closer look, he wasn't afraid of me at all. I"m watching where he flies off to, perhaps I can see where the nest is. He shows up around 7:00 am and comes throughout the day, eating for long periods of time. What a gorgeous bird!
