Mourning Doves or Morning Doves?

Are they the same bird? If so, why do some spell it differently when the definitions are different? I have an ongoing dialog with a friend everytime we drive past Morning Dove Dr (which is in a neighborhood of other birds) and he insists the spelling is Morning, because they are active in the mornings.

It is one and the same. The correct spelling is Mourning Dove. Probably because of their sweetly sad voice. Quite mournful.
