Morning Dove Left Her Nest

by Judy Levy
(San Jose, CA)

Not a great story but wanted to share so I could learn more about our Morning Dove who built a nest on the top shelf of our plastic storage area on the back porch. The dove had been sitting there for about 5 days. When she left, we noticed from our window, no eggs. Today she left just one egg at 8 am. She has been gone ever since. Did she leave her one egg on purpose. It is cold out so I assume the egg will not hatch.

Morning Dove Left 2 Eggs
by: Frank Cacucciolo

I am experiencing a similar problem with my Morning Dove who has left her nest with 2 eggs over a week ago. I unfortunately startled the bird when I was watering plants in the same area as the nest and have not seen the bird since. I hope they come back... this is the 3rd nest we have received in 2 yrs and the first 2 were successful hatches. What is the ususal length of time they would stay away from there nest before returning? I am located in Temecula, Ca and the currents temps at night range in the mid to upper 30's. Thx

Nesting doves
by: mavmacaw@yahoo.com

Sometimes in the early stages of laying eggs, the doves will leave their nests for lengthy periods for a time and come back when you least expect it. I have been studying my doves for the past three years and they never cease to amaze me, but nature has its own way of taking care of their nesting habits. I am not aware of your temperatures where you are, but I have had them do the same thing in the freezing weather. Good luck and happy babies to you.
