Michigan bird with reddish-pink splotch under the wings near body.

This bird was the size of a cardinal. It had a slim, pointed beak. The bird had the coloration of most sparrows. This is the part that amazed me, it had a pinkish red patch under each wing- close to the body. The red may have been on the leading edge of the wing as well. Does anyone know what it might be. I couldn't find it in two different bird books.
