Medium Sized Brown Bird

Sorry, I went into the house to get my camera and they were gone by the time I came back out. The birds were at the very top of our maple, where the branches are dead, so I could see them very well. They were a medium size -- maybe the same size that a seagull would be but they were perched upright, similar to how a hawk would, and were brown all over. Their heads seemed to have a shape similar to a cardinal or blue jay, and there were about 5 or 6 of them in all. They did not seem like they were fighting. Their song is what caught my attention -- I've never heard the sound before in this area.. I'm trying to look up the sound but am having a hard time. We live in Southeastern Michigan in a suburb of Detroit. We have a small creek next to us.
