Maryland - New Bird

by Mary

I am sorry not to have a picture, but I saw this bird about the size of a LARGE pigeon at the bird bath. The colorings were more like a female Cardinal but with a long, narrow beak. I am pretty familiar about the birds in this area but this one has me stumped. I can't even find it in my books. Thanks.

I am less than certain but . . . NEW
by: GaryE

It sounds like a rock pigeon to me.

I opened one of my bird books to the pigeon page and I found a rust colored variation of a rock pigeon (also known as a rock dove or common pigeon). Check out http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Rock_Pigeon/id and take a look at the 4th image from the right and see if that looks like your bird.

sound like

This sounds exactly like what I saw! At first I thought it was a fat female cardinal but it is just too big like you said the size of a pigeon. I would love to know what this bird is called! They come around often I will try and get a picture next time I see one.
