male rose-breasted grosbeaks in Florida

by Karen Lewis
(Trenton, Florida,USA)

This morning 3 male rosebreasted grosbeaks are visiting our feeder ---- a hanging plate that we put chicken scratch on. About 3 feet away is our regular feeder that we stock with sunflower seeds, but the grosbeaks prefer the corn!

We have been feeding and watching birds in north central Florida for about 10 years now and this is the first time we have seen these beautiful birds which must be in migration.

Comment
As per the post just before yours, it seems the grosbeaks have arrived in Florida! Amazingly, the previous post has them nesting in their yard.

Yaaay - me too! NEW
by: Sam

Just saw one today and I was so excited. I had no idea what he was with his unique coloring, so I had to google. He was by himself at our feeder and was not intimidated when the blue jays flew in. So interesting that there are so many sightings right now. I'm in St Pete, FL and have never seen one before.

Saw Female Rose Breasted Grosbeak NEW
by: Stewart

I haven't seen the male yet, but a female was at my sunflower seed feeder at least 3 times yesterday (4/18) while my wife and I were in our pool. The only other time I saw this species was about 10 years ago in Arkansas. First time here in Florida. Hope to see a male today !

I saw my first one ever at my sunflower feeder today..He visited at least twice that I saw and he stayed about 1/2hr each time. I had other types of seeds out {including shelled peanuts} but he preferred the oilers..I have been feeding birds at least fifty years and have never seen one before. I live in the Largo/Clearwater area.

I too just saw a male Rosebreasted Grosbeak! NEW
by: Barbara

He came to my feeder and sat in the tray eating seeds. What a treat! I live in Florida (Central) and have never seen these birds. Also, my husband just told me that his mom, who lives in St. Petersburg just saw a pair of Grosbeaks at her feeder! So thrilling!

Rose-breasted grosbeak couple arrived in west central Florida NEW
by: Colleen

These beautiful little birds arrived at our birdfeeder on Sunday, April 15. We had no idea what they were, but we were guessing they were just passing through. We looked them up and discovered that they are indeed passing through on their migration north, from the Caribbean! There is a male and a female couple.

There are also a few little bluebirds that arrived the same day, which we had no idea what they were either. So looked them up and it appears to be Blue Grosbeaks. We live in the St. Pete Beach area and absolutely love birdwatching.

Our birdfeeder is stocked up and we’re hoping they will stay here to nest, but in either case, hopefully they stay safe for their long journey north.

I love nature!! 💚🌱
