Male Rose Breasted Grosbeak in Englewood, Florida

by T. Brown
(Englewood, FL)

For the last three days, I have had a male rose breasted grosbeak at my feeders. I was quite surprised and pleased to see this unusual visitor; none of my bird books show them in Florida. I've seen these birds plenty of times when visiting my husband's family in Western New York, but never here. What a treat!

He feeds all day at my three feeders, but seems to prefer the two in the backyard. I assume because it's quieter. I just use a basic bird seed mix which has some black sunflower seeds in it. If he has a mate, I haven't seen her yet.

I've attached a picture; it's not great because I had to shoot through the screened porch, but it's good enough to make a clear identification.

I live in Indiana and they stop here every year for about 3 weeks. They are such a treat! I have 4 males and 2 females. I always hate it when they move on.
