make my son happy

by Lola

I tried this recipe to attract hummingbirds..I boiled water, sugar, and petals from roses and gardenias..

Once it is cool, I place it on my hummingbird feeder. There are times that I haven't even finish hanging it and the hummingbirds are flying around me and even some times already feeding while Im hanging it..
It is so cool that makes my son happy!

Hummingbird feeder food
by: Anonymous

Why is it everyone always trying to improve on something so simple? Here is my method. 1 cup of water, 1/4 cup of sugar. Pop it into the microwave for 3 minutes. Remove from the microwave, stir until sugar is dissolved. Let it stand until cool. Fill the feeder and put it out. Never, never use kool-aid or anything else in your water other than sugar. Doing so can kill these birds. In nature they are sucking nectar (sugar) from flowers, not flower pedal juice, not kool-aid (it’s toxic to them). Keep it as natural as can be!

Pedal, huh?
by: Tom

Maybe the flower pedals distract from the "human touch" and give the solution a more natural scent for the bummers. I'm cooking up a batch right now.

I say NO to the petals
by: Anonymous

Sorry, but the petal serve no purpose. In fact, it may make the solution spoil quicker. Keep it simple: one part sugar to four parts water. You MUS.T boil the solution to make sure that all bacteria is killed (at least for 3-4 minutes).

what a wonderful way to feed the birds
by: Anonymous

I was just given a humming bird feeder and store made powder (that looks a lot like sugar) and was probably expensive. As soon as the feeder is empty I am going to try this recipe. I am going to boil the petals in the water and then add the sugar and then strain and cool.

HB Food--Easy to Make
by: Harry Hill

Instead of putting the sugar INTO the boiling water...and making a mess-and using a pot that adds to the sugar, why not put the boiling water INTO the sugar?
I pour 2 cups of water boiled in a Pyrex glass (MW) and pour onto the 1 cup of sugar in a glass containeer. Stir and it is finished. Then, add 2 more cups of tap water and that completes it.
Tres Easy.

Petals in or out?
by: Jill

I love your idea! One question...did you strain out the petals or leave them in the mixture you put in the bird feeder?Thank you!

We are going to try it! We live in southern California and have many hummingbirds.
