I live in western border of Tidewater region of Virginia. In late afternoon, I can hear what I assume is a bird of prey making intermittent, loud, long in duration squawks. I finally tried to make the same sound. The bird responded with another squawk but it sounded suddenly further away

I have identified the yellow shafted flicker in my backyard . We have several of them feeding on the lawn. It looks like they are pulling out grubs.
