Hello Calgary,

Your bird sounds like a Red-Shafted Northern Flicker and it is a woodpecker.

Here are some reputable/safe links for more info on the flicker:

http://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/northern-flicker (this site has more of it's calls available

The red-shafted male had a Nike like strike on it's cheek, the yellow-shafted is the one with a red cap. The yellow-shafted has yellow feathers underneath instead of the red you have described.

Put suet out and they will continue to visit!
