little black bird that resembles a blue jay?

Hi!

I live in Orange County, in California, and need help identifying a bird. It resembles a blue jay, and whenever I search it's characteristics, the search brings up blue jays; but my bird has no blue. It's little, a little bit bigger than a man's fist, it's black but with a whit/grayish(?) breast, has a mohawk thing on the top of it's head. It likes to swoop down and grab worms out of the ground. I have had these birds at every place I've lived and would love to know what it is. It's a fast little bird, it doesn't really sit still, so unfortunately, I have no photo to post. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
