Like a cross between a heron and a kiwi

by Douglas Slachter
(Wendell, Id)

This bird is reddish brown with dark green wings. Long, narrow, curved beak similar to the shape oof a kiwi. Long neck and legs. It looks like an undersized heron. It has a call that is throaty (almost goose like) and sounds remarkably similar to the ememergency broadcast tone that they use on the radio. I found it pecking around a flooded grassy field in southern Idaho.

I couldn't get close enough for a picture, but hopefully someone can help me figure this out.
