This bird is reddish brown with dark green wings. Long, narrow, curved beak similar to the shape oof a kiwi. Long neck and legs. It looks like an undersized heron. It has a call that is throaty (almost goose like) and sounds remarkably similar to the ememergency broadcast tone that they use on the radio. I found it pecking around a flooded grassy field in southern Idaho.

I have identified the yellow shafted flicker in my backyard . We have several of them feeding on the lawn. It looks like they are pulling out grubs.
