I live in NW I Indiana. A pair of these birds has lived near my pond for a few years. They are dark colored with orange feet. They make loud squawks occasionally. They are the size of a small duck with a very long neck. The beak is 2-3 inches. The pair stays pretty close. They love to hang out in the very top of a dead tree over the water. I have never seen them fish.

Hi Les,

If you can give us a little more information it would help. You have already given quite a bit but are there any other markings on the birds other than the description of being dark? What color is the beak?

If there is any difference between the two birds, that info is very important too because in many species the male and female are different, but this is not always the case!
