Large brown-red dove like bird with distinctive call

by Patty

I've been hearing this elusive bird in my backyard woods...very loud call similar to the pileated woodpecker that also resides there. It's just a series of fast, loud singular note calls. My cat must have flushed them out of a low branch....they flew right over my house to another tree, and were lost again! First impression is they were pigeon or dove like, shape, orange brown, big breast, short tailed, female quite bright, smaller male less so, low flying, resides in deciduous backyard trees,....help! We all hear this loud call but can not identify!
