large brown bird

Seen a large brown bird in my neighbor's yard in Louisville, KY. I would say it was at least 18 inches tall. It looked large enough to easily eat a kitten or a rat. I thought it was as big as an eagle. My daughter thought it looked like a humungous robin. (It was big enough to eat a robin.) My son thought the coloring resembled an owl. It had its back to me. But my daughter said it had a yellow beak and she thought it had a red chest. The tail feathers were wide and straight across, like an owl's (not at a point like a cardinals). Any ideas? I was trying to get a picture but it was faster than I was.
