Large bird

This bird was perched on my backyard fence. It looked to be nearly 12" high. Hooked beak, dark grey feathers with some white mixed in. The underside was completely white.

I have seen this before swooping down very low in a formation of three of these large birds. Very dramatic. They swoop down within 6-8' of the ground.
