KC gray bird with red beak

This bird has been throwing himself at our large plate glass window for months and sits on the doorhandle and pecks at glass - weird! He is medium sized gray with a short red beak (fully red) and darker red tail feathers. He is much larger than the sparrows that normally hang out in our area, but have never seen a bird like this. He is not a red-headed woodpecker as his head and body are mostly medium to dark gray, just has the short red beak. He is relentless against the windows.
