Possibly a Red Winged Black Bird
by: Amy M.

From the back it's hard to make a positive identification, but I can see a small amount of white on the wing. From your description, this looks like it could be a Red-Winged Black Bird, possibly an immature male. They normally fly in flocks but I've seen single birds at my feeders before.
