I live in Cashmere, Wa. and still have two hummingbirds at my feeder in late November. Will they stay all winter and how do I keep the feeder from freezing?

hummers in November

I have a friend here in East Wenatchee, WA who still has two hummers coming to her feeders. Our question is how to keep the nectar from freezing and is it normal to still have hummingbirds this late in the season?

winter hummer feeding

I use a heat lamp when the weather gets cold enough to freeze the sugar water. I've had hummers in turpor sitting at my frozen feeder in the morning. Now I occasionally get a hummer basking in the heat lamp.

Winter Hummers

We have had hummers in winter for several years now. I keep two small feeders going. One I keep inside. When I see the outside one freezing, I replace it with the other one. Especially in the cold mornings I get up at dawn to change them. Also I use a third cup of sugar per cup of water instead of the quarter cup of sugar. That will lower the freezing point a bit. My Hummers stay all winter.
