Hummingbirds in Utah

by Betty
(St. George, Utah)

I live in St. George, Utah ( the very southern and north). It is very hot through the summer and I have dozens of the grey hummingbirds and sometimes a grey with a black head. The temperature is dropping into the 70's now and i hardly see any. I do know that they are always fighting and driving each other away. Are they just tired of getting driven away or is the slight change in temperature making them leave?

You likely are enjoying the Black-chinned Hummingbird. And yes, they are no doubt heading on their migratory journey to Mexico, although some winter in the southeast states. Happy Birding!

humming birds in Mesquite, nv
by: Anonymous

I live in Mesquite NV, that is 30 minutes south of St George. typically 5F to 8F warmer than St. George in the winter months. Hummingbirds stayed in my area throughout this winter. They chase each other because they are territorial.

Fewer HB's
by: Harry Hill

It used to be that HB's were swarming at my feeders. One time-only-we saw 12 sitting on two 6 spot feeders.
I have lost a bunch here in Sunbrook GC. Moths...frogs...wasps...foxes...outside cockroaches (Yes!)..butterflies..few bees..all lizards..caterpillers..It seems to be a Silent Spring-Summer-Fall and Winter. Nobody seems to care. I do not spray for bugs.
