Hummingbird??

by Tammy Brister
(Mission, TX)

This bird was flying around our neighbors esperanza. I at first thought it was one of the big black furry bees that are always present, but upon closer examination, my husband said no he thought it was a hummingbird. It's body was gray and black. It was only about an inch long, maybe 1 1/2 inches but no more. On its back it had a white stipe. It was the coolest little thing I had ever seen. I have seen many rufous hummingbirds here, but never a bird like this.

Hummingbird??

What you are describing sounds like a hummingbird moth. I think they are insects rather than a bird, but as someone said, you can probably find the answer if you were to do a google search and put "hummingbird moth in the box.
