help me identify my nesting backyard duck! and advice

by Andrea
(Chicago Suburbs)

She is brown speckled, dark thin stripe through eye, dark beak. I see a bit of lighter/whiter feathers around her tail. To me she best matches female northern pintail in my books but I am in IL, so this seems unlikely. Beautiful duck. She built her next inside our fenced in yard and its a ways to water. Husband and I debating whether to tether gate open to help her and chicks get out or closed for predators (its the suburbs).

Thank you!

I'll try to snap a photo tomorrow but I don't want to disturb her

Yes, to positively ID her we will need a picture. In regards to the gate, I would think that if you can watch the nest for when the chicks hatch it is best to leave it closed. I think she might be able to get the babes to water on her own, but if she needs your help I think you will know. If she can't get them there right away she won't leave them. Of course if you can ID her species you may have a good idea of when the chicks will fledge, (leave,) the nest.
