Help identify this bird

by Nancy
(Zeigler, Illinois )

I saw a small, light brown bird (no bright colors or sheen) with a plume on its head. It was a little larger than a sparrow but smaller than a cardinal. It flew up to eathe from a hanging feeder.

I have never seen one of these at our feeders before. It was seen at a back yard feeder in a small town in Illinois.

Can you help identify this bird. I was not able to get a picture.

I wonder if you possibly saw a young Cardinal or a female Cardinal as they would have similar coloration as opposed to the male which is bright red in color in adulthood.
