Have you seen this bird?

A somewhat hefty dove type bird with a long-ish beak, like a sandpiper. It had a short tail, and brown and white feathers that resemble a quail in pattern. It had a beige front with a lovely black chest plate and what looks like a red kerchief on its back. It was active on the ground, eating seeds, I suppose. Its back, under its wings, was white.

I saw it in the late morning on my lawn in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. It was raining.

Pretty certain by your description that you have Northern Flicker. I have moved your question to the Northern Flicker page, so you can compare,
Susan
I tried to photograph it but it flew off before I could get a shot.

Thanks so much for any help.
