Gray Jay Nesting Oddity

by Martha Hurd-Call
(Standish, Maine)

Looking out of my bedroom window one fine morning, I spied a pair of gray jays on the telephone wire outside. Had never seen any of these, although we have many, many species at our bird feeders. They are obviously a nesting pair and tried building a nest atop one of the shutters outside my bedroom window. The first was a no go. They tried building a nest on the opposite shutter. That didn't work either. They tried to build nests on the side mirrors of my car. We moved the car and washed off what they had placed. They are still on the telephone wire and are eyeing the truck mirrors and the ATV. It's not like we are not surrounded by forest; we live in the woods and are surrounded by pine, maple, birch, oak, etc. but they seem to be fixated on nesting on one of our vehicles.
