Gail from Woodstock

I wasn't able to get a picture, sorry. The bird is not quite the size of a robin that is dark on body but has a red throat & no tuft on top of head but some red on top also & red coloring where tail meets the body... didn't see him fly but was grooming himself in a sunny dirt patch. I've never seen a bird like this. Red patch on his throat wasn't shiny like a hummingbird but was in the same area. Can you help?
