Found Dove egg on ground

by Jeanne Andrew
(Hillsboro, Ohio USA)

Two weeks ago I placed a Dove egg under my nesting pet Canary and she is taking care of it. I recently checked to see if it was fertile by putting the egg over a night light in a dark place and low-and-behold there is a baby Dove maturing inside. It should hatch on Mothers Day.
I hope she can take care of it for a few days at least until it matures some then I can take over. Ive raised many wild baby birds that have been on the ground from a storm, still bald and helpless.
But I must admit I am tempted to keep this one if it lives because I heard Doves make wonderful pets. I have many pet birds and probably will try, but will see how things go one day at a time. I may have to let it go when it is ready.
I thought this was pretty interesting in the fact that my Canaries will be raising a much larger bird then her own babies. I have heard of this before but feel very fortunate to have this opportunity!!! Nature is wonderful for sure!
God bless
Jeanne
