Flicker in the Owls' House


(Eugene, OR)

Last year we put up a lovely wooden house, sized to fit a Western Screech Owl (of which we have many), up in the Sequoia in our back yard. Last spring we saw two owls using it often, but they didn't nest there.
Imagine our surprise when a Flicker stuck his/her head out of the box in the autumn; that flicker has been sighted three times in the box, and once "(s)he even spent the night there!
