First time visit!!! Summer Tanager male!

by Shirl Abrahamson
(Jacksonville NC)

This evening August 2 2011 I got this picture of a Summer Tanager male! He was chasing a female which are yellow but the picture I got of her was too blurry.

Comment
I think this is a photo of a female Scarlet Tanager.

Of the 350 species of tanagers in the tropics, only four think it worthwhile to visit the United States and one of these frequently suffers because he starts too early. The Western Tanager is the only one to venture further north to Canada.
Happy Birding,
Susan

Thanks for the information. This bird was chasing a yellow bird and will be out again tomorrow to see if I can get a better picture!
