Finally got some rain!

And today we see a "new" bird in the yard. Red body, much like a cardinal and a blackish/grayish head. Was around our herb garden and some evergreen bushes. What is it?

a bald cardinal. I have been seeing one around my house lately (Mid-Missouri)and couldn't figure out what this thing was with the huge red beak. I am familiar with Cardinals and it just didn't look like one at all. Another poster on this sight http://www.a-home-for-wild-birds.com/zombie-cardinal.html posted a link http://www.birds.cornell.edu/pfw/AboutBirdsandFeeding/BaldBirds.htm
It shows a lot of pictures of these bald birdsand sure enough mine was a bald cardinal. Apparently it could be mites or lice, or just an unusual molt. Hope this helps (it sure helped me!)
