Why "Red-Bellied" for its name?

by Denis

We seem to have several "Red-Bellied" Woodpeckers stopping by at our feeders. They do not appear to have red bellies, but white to gray colors. I've tried several times to see the "red belly" on any of them, but without success. Name seems to be very inappropriate for this quite beautiful bird.
