WHAT IS IT!

by Catherine Maille
(Sudbury, Ontario Canada)

I happened to be looking out my kitchen window at the feeders in the backyard and saw this huge bird eating beside a sparrow.

I had no idea what it was and watched as he (since discovered it was a male) ate the suet before flying off. I immediately checked the Ontario bird book to get information and to find out if he was a frequent visitor to our area.

We do use a variety of seed and fruit and do attract other woodpeckers but never this beautiful bird. What a treat. I hope he returns so I can get a picture.
