A brand new bird arrived on the ground beneath my feeder in Lexington MA, September 20, 2015. Strongly colored wings in black and white, and red patch on the upper chest. A stocky bird, bigger than a sparrow. Quick visit to the books suggests its a redbreasted grosbeak, but I've not seen one before. The black and white on the pictured adult males is unmistakable, I would think; the one I saw maybe was a juvenile, because the red patch on the chest was obvious, akin to dilute ketchup but clearly less vivid then the brilliant red shown in the books.
Interestingly, this bird arrived one day after I had tossed some pumpkin seeds and leftover large seeds (? type) from my local Arabic grocery store. I don't usually have those at my feeder.
Do I have the identification correct.
