Rose Breasted Friends

by Doug Burdick

We live in Western NY, Chautauqua County. We started feeding birds last year when we moved to a new home. I noted 10 different species at one time at our feeders last year. Our favorite species by far, is the Rose Breasted Grosbeak.

We are always trying to learn more and had a lot of questions. Thank heavens for the internet! It is interesting to see them all in different stages...we seem to have more females, as one, two, or three year-olds. They feed on our black oil sunflower seeds and make themselves comfortable for several minutes, mostly in the mornings and evenings. When the bright adult breeding male is here, it is hard to miss. We leave the windows open and can hear their cheerful song very clearly.

They are a true wonder of nature and we are grateful that they find our feeders a good place to hang out.
