Red-breasted grosbeaks.

by Bonnie
(Naples, FL)

I just filmed about 6 red-breasted grosbeaks in my hibiscus tree in Naples Florida today. There were about 5 babies and then a larger brown one. Never have seen anything like them before.

Among birds, as among humans, it is the father who lends his name to the family. Mrs. Grosbeak has not a red-colored feather on her. She is a streaked, brown bird, resembling an overgrown sparrow, with a thick finch bill. When her husband migrates to the tropics, his feather are said to be similar to hers, so that even his name, then does not fit.
