My Rose Breasted Grosbeaks

by Vonda Lavway

I have never had a Rose Breasted Grosbeak visit my feeders until this spring. I saw my first one on the ground under my feeder and I knew immediately what it was because I am a member of Maine Birds Facebook page so I am getting well educated on types of birds I see, and am looking to see.
My RBG came around occasionally when I was putting out black oiled seeds and cracked corn. But I read that they like the striped sunflower seeds so I added them to the mix and now I get them several times a day. I have had a male and female visit together and I was even lucky enough to have two males at the same time! These are my favorite birds to watch...so beautiful so bright, and so big! I was out cutting weeds today and I had a male visit the feeder right next to me! I am happy they are getting comfortable around here! They frequent my round clear feeder (donut shape) with the middle area designed as the feeding spot. They also like suet with nuts and mealworms. I have a canister feeder with an attached tray and I rarely see them there.
Happy birdwatching to you all....hope everyone gets at least one visit from the awesome Red-Breasted Grosbeak!
