Finch Season

by Chris
(Central California)

Well its September in Central California and the heat is finally on its way out that sounds nice. On another note the american gold finch is in my neighbor hood they can be heard in the sky and in many trees. Although not in great numbers until October hits will we see any action at the feeders.

Last year was my first encounter with these guys/gals and it was crazy. Their huge numbers around 35-40 made for a spectacular seen my neighbors loved the view. I used a niger/thistle tube feeder its called a MoBi feeder which just means more birds its made of wire mesh its a nice yellow color. I place mine next to my brazilian pepper tree and a nice water fountain and it makes the perfect dine in.

This year I plan to add a nice bright yellow sock feeder found at the local wild bird center. And remember if you invite them they will come just get ready to buy huge amounts of niger seed. During the season i'll be sure to add photos of the gold finches and sometimes lesser finches and an occasional pine siskin may show up ...
