Feeding on Nectar or mistaking for food?

I looked out the kitchen window and saw a pileated woodpecker hanging on the hummingbird feeder. We made eye contact and then he flew away.

Ants with a side of nectar? NEW

I've seen ladderbacks at my hummingbird feeders. I didn't know if they were sipping nectar or munching on freeloading ants. Or both!

I'd like to think the pileated woodpecker was having dessert, after eating bugs all day; blecch! Wouldn't you want something sweet ? Sorry, probably not a helpful reply. But after 30 inches of snowfall...
