fat, greyish brown speckled bird?

The bird looks like a large songbird... slightly bigger than a robin. Its body is speckled, especially in the front, white chest and little dark marks, tons of them. White outlines on the wing feathers, but I think the head is a solid color, and more brown than the body. The tips of the wings were a more intense brown. We saw about eight all on top of a tree in our backyard outside of Toronto, and they all looked really fat? It was weird.

There were a few smaller birds with almost sparrow coloring, browns and whites in the same pattern. They had the same body shape, fatter than an actual sparrow, but they were a little smaller than the grey speckled ones, so I'm not sure if they were the same species.
