Bird is largish, has coloring of a female duck, spiky beak, and seems to prefer to run than to fly.

Looks similar to a Kiwi maybe NEW

I have no idea what it might be! LOL! Based on your description, I had a couple ideas. What about a Roadrunner? They're not as round as a Kiwi, but it has the other characteristics you mentioned. Also, could it possibly be a juvenile of some bird? Do you have any photos by any chance? Sounds very interesting and cool!
