Dying to know!!

Ive only seen the outline of my mystery bird because its active right after dark...but I think it may be a blue-ish grey. I think its a rather large bird with a pointy beak. Its call sounds like a cross between a chicken and a crow. It likes crawdads from a nearby creek...Ive found the shells under a tree they hang out in. For the life of me , I cant get a good look at it. I live smack dab between San Francisco and Sacramento, California. Please help!

Heron? NEW
by: Barbara

Could it then be a blue heron? However, they are bigger than a fat seagull. I hope you find the answer. Post a pic if you can get one.

When you say, "Rather large" what is large? The size of a pigeon, a dove, or a blue heron? Thank you.

It sounds like a Whippoorwill but I don't know for sure.
