Definitely an appropriate name!

What a red belly!

What a red belly!

What a red belly! Thief gets his own dog bowl!

I read one reader's comment about these birds' name, (as being inappropriate) and wanted to submit these photos I took today of one of "my" little "red-bellied" guys, in order to dismiss that reader's doubt.

I am blessed to have so many of these little guys in my yard, but... they kept stealing from my dog's food bowl, so I gave them their own bowl! So far they love peanuts, suet pellets & yes, dog food!

I have seen some also refer to this bird as a Zebra backed Woodpecker. Which is also fairly appropriate as they have a distinctive zebra like pattern on their back.

They also have a very Rosey colored head, so
perhaps they could also be known as a Rosey headed woodpecker!

Whatever one likes to call them they sure are a fun addition to a backyard feeder! :-)
