Brown, white and black bird

by Jenny

Spotted during a train journey in a field near Carlisle, the bird was roughly pigeon sized or larger, with a white stripe across its open wings and across its tail which I think was black tipped. The body was light brown and I think it had a black and white head. I have searched through bird books and on the internet - can anyone identify the bird please?

I just saw a similar sounding bird with a group of blackbirds in my yard this morning. Curious looking thing.
