Brown bird with black head

I'm sorry, it flew away before I could get a picture. I live in central Kansas, and a few days ago I was standing at my kitchen sink watching my bird feeder, when a bird flew in to eat. I had never seen one like it before, and haven't had any luck finding it in any of my bird books or googling it. This bird was very similar to a female yellow-headed blackbird, except that it had a jet black head, and the brown of its body was a little lighter drab color; it may have been a little bigger also. There were no other markings on it. The black of the head, didn't go very far down on the chest, so it was like a male common grackle's "hood". I haven't seen it again, so either it was just passing through, or I just haven't been watching when it came back. Any ideas what this could have been?
