Brown Bird Tall!

A few years ago, I was coming out of my house in Holly, Michigan, and saw the most amazing thing! A family of birds approximately four feet tall, brown, and sounding like a trumpet. The birds were the largest I have ever seen, they look almost like an egret, but I haven't seen any that are the color of a deer. In one swoop the birds jumped and flapped their wings once and were over a twenty five foot pine. What kind of bird is this? I checked my bird books and the only thing close was some kind of egret that was not native to Michigan...

I think that you are talking about the Sandhill Crane

Sandhill Cranes spend summers in the Wisconsin Minnesota and Michigan areas and winter in Florida. I just learned about these birds not to long ago after just noticing them in fields across MN and WI. They travel in groups mostly all family...
